Darvozweek Day 1

Monday 29th January 2018 at Newspeak House

Day 1 is about Liquid Wiki

12.30 David Bovill is showing Arthur Brock how Federated Wiki works.

12.40 Arthur is going to get us to install Holochain.

12.50 Already the group have installed Holochain and then the app Clutter. (a Twitter-like app)

13.00 Arthur (Art) reflects on how easy it was to get Holochain installed and running compared to an Ethereum local node, which takes ages to sync.

13.05 Art explains the bare bones of the Clutter install. The DNA metaphor is being discussed.

13.10 The genesis entry of the Holochain DNA is introduced.

13.20 Looking into the source code of Clutter, Zomes "are our names for modules".

14.00 Coffee break style free-form interactions

14.30 Just met Emaline who blogs on Medium for the Holochain project.

14.45 Zoom conference starts, we are now looking at Holohackers Map Anders Aamodt is explaining the map. The colours on the map are explained here

15.10 Our Zoom conference has successfully concluded (we had around 10 participants).

15.30 Dil Green and Andrew are doing a FedWiki table. The programmers are deep-diving into bits of code to discuss strategic aims.

15.40 Lunch is 'happening'

17.00 After a productive 'working lunch' we are now sufficiently acquainted with the main themes being worked on by different tables.

17.10 Dil and Andrew are working on defining 'Liquid Wiki' on the FedWiki table.

18.00 David is leading a Zoom conference with other developers online.

18.10 Wessel Reijers is talking on Zoom about the intention to use this technology in a democracy engagement context.

18.15 The discourse around technology-mediated-democracy in invoked and DiEM25 is referenced.

18.30 Art is talking about "how we encode communication" in various forms of (enclosed/unenclosed) carriers, which is pertinent to the Holochain philosophy.

18.40 David is talking about 'forking and flocking' from an earlier discussion. This leads to a general discussion on the consensus forming behaviours amongst people.

18.50 David wraps up our room discussion with a summary of how Zoom can be used for hundreds of participants, which can have small breakout groups. The notion of transcribing conversations and the media hosting of video and audio is mentioned.

19.00 David is convening our 3rd scheduled Zoom conference and Ward Cunningham has joined us.

19.15 Our 'intention' to develop a 'fault tolerant wiki' is being discussed and evaluated. Many features of such a system are being enumerated.

19.20 Connor Turland asked us to clarify our aims. James mentioned a censorship resistant wiki. Dil has mentioned the philosophical similarities with Holochain and a decentralised Federated Wiki.

19.30 Ward thoughtfully reflects on some of our technical challenges.

19.40 Gilson Schwartz is talking on his interests, with some perspective as a media theorist. Radio and sound clips being mentioned. He asks "What does it mean to have a voice in contemporary networking platforms?"

19.55 Ward talks about the importance of JSON as a crucial part of our strategic picture.

20.00 Art addresses the particulars of using JSON.

20.10 Ward summarises some of the goals by appealing to us to create the type of prototype we need to sustain an ongoing sophisticated discourse (about this deep topic).

20.15 David is wrapping up our Zoom conference and thanking the participants.
